New Bike Day: Cube Cargo Sport
A year ago I wanted to try an experiment: is a cargo bike a viable option for getting around in Adelaide. We managed to find a second hand Gazelle Cabby, electrified it, and started putting it to work.
At the time I wondered why we didn't see more cargo bikes in Adelaide, given our great weather and reasonably flat geography. I think most of the reason is lack of safe infrastructure, but another part is early adopter risk: are you crazy enough to spend that much money on a bike if you are unsure about it.
An older bike with an electric conversion is a great way to try it out. Our Cabby got used for childcare dropoffs, groceries, Bunnings trips, bottlo trips, and bigger adventures around town. It really worked.
And then in February, the Cabby was stolen from our house. This sucks, and I'm still holding out some hope that it will turn up one day. It surprised me how quickly the bike ingrained itself into how we got around and did things.
So 6 months later, we made the decision and bought this: The Cube Cargo Sport Hybrid. This isn't a review, because we need to ride it more. But so far, the bike is fantastic.
But they're expensive. Even though this one is just over half the cost of an Urban Arrow or Reise and Muller.
But here's the thing: the original experiment was successful. We're selling a car and swapping it for a really useful bicycle. So we're instantly in the green financially, and that only gets better every time we ride, because cars, even cheap ones, are really expensive.
Party on.
